NBA TOONS: The NBA Alphabet August 12, 2006

Posted by TheHype in NBA TOONS, Unrelatedness , 7 comments |

So I took a very interesting and fun “challenge” I saw on BoingBoing earlier and thought it’d be a good experiment to do a 1 Hour Mad Dash Doodle of things pertaining to the NBA. This post might get lenghty (and/or bad for your eyes if you don’t like amateur cartoonists) so below is the whole thing in bulk and after the jump, I have written down some reasonings and explainations for said “bulk-drawings” as each one gets worse than the previous ones…

Ruben Is “Captain Chaos?” August 10, 2006

Chaos

It just looks weird when mainstream news wires would write out whack sounding nicknames for NBA players, even if it’s real. Exhibit A: Ruben Patterson is being “Quoted/Unquoted” with the affectionate name of “Captain Chaos” by the Getty Images people. Now I don’t doubt their sources (actually I do, they get their captions wrong, a lot) but having someone actually sit down and type those two words down without a sense of irony is pretty darn funny, to me at least. It just sounds stupid, “Yo Cap’n Chaos, what are your team’s objectives?”

Suggestions for future nicknames that should appear in Yahoo! or any other legit wire sources now that “Captain Chaos” makes the cut

Y’know, just whatever.

Here’s How I Would Get To Japan August 9, 2006

What this means.. I have no fucking clue.. but this time, I can truly say I was bored! But yeah, I’m still pissed that I won’t get to see any games on tv.

There seems to be some Dr. J referencing around the net or the technical term: “Series of Tubes”. TrueHoop posted an amusing vid made by his actor/buddy (whom after I checked up on imdb, realized he was on Everwood! That’s double cool for being on an amazing show) and Basketbawful has an intense matchup between Julius and Larry Bird.

And oh yea.. if you’re not yawning from disappointment from the above “creation” and you’re still interested, that is of course, Steve Nash’s old rag as the last term of the equation.

Thus, I took it upon myself to make my own find and take advantage of someone else’s YouTube tribute video for y’alls that’s interested:

The Fun Is Underway At The Worlds August 7, 2006

Rap Battle 06!

The broadcast of the World Championships couldn’t be any worse for basketball fans in Canada. We have two national sports networks in TSN and Rogers Sportsnet with a satellite cable network called The Score and we still can’t get easy access to one of the bigger events for ball fans? Sure there’s RaptorsTV that’s part of that NBATV network, but like the Score, it’s an extra subsription not really worth it.

So fine, Team Canada didn’t make the cut, but why should the growing number of baller fans in Canada suffer because of it? This is a once in 4 years chance to see how every country is playing (discounting Olympics because it’s not primarily focused on bball) and see who’s hot out there.

And the other thing is, it’s a half a world away so the time difference is going to kill any hardcore viewer’s chance of getting to bed at a humane hour. However, us Canucks don’t even GET that chance to be sleep deprived, for shame.

NBA TOONS: The New NBA Ball’s Life August 5, 2006

I’m not kidding, almost every day I get a click from “New NBA Ball” — I know it’s the popular thing to seek out, but there’s really not that much more that’s interesting about it until it’s used live in the beginning of the season. So.. that’s that.

In other, more useful news: Barbosa gets $33M…. good for him.. that makes one Brazilian in the league worthy of the prize.

If any of y’all don’t have ESPN 2 (not that you really want to in the first place), give TVU a try over at downloads.com, that’s how I caught the exhibition game the other night. If you get enough connections, the quality’s pretty good for what it offers. It works on the P2P technology.

And this short, but extremely well edited video made me laugh for a good 4-8 minutes, definitely worth one minute of your time.

Hmm.. not how I wanted the drawing to come out.. hey, I’m just an amateur doodler, trying it out for the first time so it’s bound to look (for lack of a better term,) “bad” now and again.
But anyways, that’s how I imagine things will go down this 25th of December. I’m not against the idea of having the Shaq/Kobe duel again for the 3rd year in a row. It feels like a nouveaux tradition the NBA desperately needs to instill into ABC (since y’know, they can’t even come up with the tradition of, oh I don’t know, BEING GOOD AT BROADCASTING)

In other news: Team USA looks great with that easy scrimmage against Puerto Rico. When the teams shook hands (in that vid), I totally forgot that Carlos Arroyo and Dwight Howard were teammates! Though it looks like the team doesn’t need any more motivation, but I’m sure if they watched this, it might pump them up before every match of the tournament.

By the way, I consider that one sick play to be a microcosm of how humiliated the team was during the ‘04 Games.

Unrelatedness of the Day:
My new favourite artist/album is Rhymefest and his debut “Blue Collar”. Finally a whole cd that I can listen to without having to hear rims/pimpjuice et al. There’s certainly some Common-vibe in there, seeing that he’s also from Chi-Town but on the whole his lyrics are tight. All the songs on it are worth listening to more than once and Kanye adds his solid beats there too. And funny cameo by ODB too.

Mr. Weather Putting Up Huge Numbers Today August 1, 2006

For my inaugural August 1st post, I shall waste it on the Weather, specifically Mr. Weather, playing for Team Sun. Their record this Summer was a scorching 10-0 against Earthlings and the Arctic glaciers. Their offence is probably the best it has been in 200 years. UV Ray, their leading assist man put up solid stats as he helped his All-Star teammate UnbearableHeat get the game high 42°C (107.6°F!) from the field today.

It looks like a dynasty is in the making… for another 10-15 years (however long the Earth can last, literally)

I am going to hide in the freezer with Mr. Popsicle until further notice.
